From year to year, interest in both private and public swimming pools among Russians remains strong. During the pandemic, demand for swimming pools nearly doubled, and this trend continues.
As of February 2024, there are 6,575 swimming pools in Russia, including 5,875 indoor pools. Their numbers increase each year. Read about the current state of the swimming pool market, its key trends, and development prospects in this article.
Seasonality in the Swimming Pool Market
Traditionally, with the onset of summer, the demand for swimming pools steadily increases. During the May holidays, analysts from marketplaces and retail companies observed a significant rise in the popularity of swimming pools. According to Leroy Merlin, sales increased by 94% from April 27 to May 1, 2024, compared to the same period last year.
In 2024, the summer was particularly warm. As a result, demand for bathing, bathhouse, and sauna products increased sixfold, as reported by Avito analysts. Most sales were of frame pools—accounting for 40%—which saw a ninefold increase in June. Hot tubs made up 8.2% of sales, inflatable pools 7.9%, and bathtubs 3%. The remainder was attributed to devices, products, and chemicals for pool maintenance.
Frame and Inflatable Pools are a Priority
The popularity of frame and inflatable pools among Russians continues to grow. These pools are attractive due to their convenience—they are easy to install, and with the onset of cold weather, they can be disassembled and stored until the next season. According to DISCOVERY Research Group, in 2022, the volume of the Russian market for frame pools amounted to $79 million, while inflatable pools reached $25.6 million. The main domestic production for both types of pools is located in the Republic of Bashkortostan.
The market for frame and inflatable pools is highly dependent on imports, with most supplies coming from China. Leading suppliers of inflatable and frame pools include the Chinese companies INTEX and Bestway.
Public Swimming Pools: Major Projects for the Future
To meet the growing demand for a healthy lifestyle, new public swimming pools are being built, and existing ones are being renovated. Between 2023 and 2025, 16 swimming pools are planned for construction in Moscow—matching the total built between 2011 and 2022. In Perm, three new swimming pools are planned, with at least two being Olympic-sized (50-meter lanes). In November 2023, a developer in Novosibirsk received permission to build a sports and recreation complex with a swimming pool. The construction of new swimming pools is also planned in smaller towns, such as a year-round heated pool in Armavir.
Private companies are also significantly contributing to the construction of swimming pools. For instance, the Federal Network of City Resorts, Termoland, is building SPA complexes in Moscow, the Moscow Region, and other cities in Russia. By the end of 2024, the company plans to open more than 10 new complexes.
The Future of the Swimming Pool Market in Russia
The Russian swimming pool market, along with the materials and components needed, has great development potential. Several factors will drive not only quantitative but also qualitative growth.
- Increase in Market Demand
With the rising interest of Russians in water activities and swimming pools, manufacturers and suppliers are expanding their product lines and offering new innovations. Growing competition in the market is also expected to enhance the quality of products and services offered. - Innovative Materials and Technologies
New technologies are emerging to increase the lifespan of pools, simplify construction processes, and ensure high hygiene standards. For instance, advanced waterproofing techniques and ceramic tile installation methods are being used. The concept of a "smart" home is also becoming increasingly popular, and with rapid technological development, swimming pools can now be integrated into this system. Through a centralized control system, pool owners can remotely manage cleaning, filtration, water heating, and more. - Government Initiatives
At the state level, large-scale initiatives are being taken to promote a healthy lifestyle and the development of mass sports, including swimming. One of the most notable programs is the "500 Swimming Pools" project, which aimed to build and renovate swimming pools in universities across the country. From 2010 to 2016, 72 swimming pools were built under this initiative. In early 2024, the "Swimming for All" program was approved in Russia, which will be in effect until 2030. The program aims to teach 12.5 million children how to swim by this time. It also includes the development of infrastructure in kindergartens, schools, and children's recreational areas.
